Building Services Technician

In 2013, Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, combined with the University of Cambridge to fund the world class Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, situated on the Addenbrooke's Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.

As part of the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, the Institute's research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses over 400 researchers and support staff with 22 research groups and associated core facilities in a state-of-the-art research facility.

We are now recruiting a Building Services Technician (Electrically Biased) who will be responsible for the maintenance of electrical and mechanical services and maintain the fabric, fixtures and fittings of the building to support the effective operation and objectives of the Institute.

Delivering a high quality service across the Institute, the role holder will:

  • Carry out breakdown and planned preventive maintenance. Be technically competent in the day-to-day operation of a plant room, carry out safety checks and keep records accordingly, diagnose and carry out first line repairs to plant and equipment, carry out preventative maintenance on the plant, daily check on control panels, pumps, extract fans etc. and check the department's air handling units throughout the building.

  • Use established systems to plan and carryout routine inspections e.g. water treatment, heating, air conditioning and ventilation etc. Prioritise planned maintenance, where necessary carry out technical investigative work required, give adequate notice to planned shutdowns in consultation with the Facilities Manager and/or Principal Assistant and other occupants of the building.

  • Liaise with internal personnel and external contractors to repair or undertake routine servicing of plant and complete any remedial work required. Determine and authorise the purchase of all materials required and ensure that they are procured in time and within an agreed budget, progress tasks on-site to completion so that all deadlines are achieved, report to Engineering Manager should circumstances arise adversely affecting the task progress.

  • Co-ordinate and monitor permit to Work system. Issue detailed work orders i.e. permits to work for plant areas, laboratory etc., provide technical, operational and/or progress advice on each task to building occupants involved.

  • Carry out major and minor works and installations either by self or contractors with the authorisation of the Facilities Manager/Engineering Manager. Be responsible for the technical specification of the work involved, progress and final operational testing and certification of all contractors' work, ensure completed work is signed off by the Building Services & Facilities Manager/Engineering Manager.

  • Assist in refurbishment carrying out minor workplace improvements and alterations i.e. electrical rewiring, replacing electrical and data sockets.

  • Conduct PAT testing of newly acquired electrical items and conduct minor repairs as required.

The successful candidate will possess excellent customer service skills, have great attention to detail, be able to use their own initiative and have strong oral and written communication skills. They will have a broad range of experience in a maintenance environment and experience of working in building/ maintenance services including practical experience of the installation of electrical and other services. They will have knowledge and understanding of preventive and breakdown maintenance techniques in mechanical, electrical and civil trades and environments. Experience within the laboratory environment would be desirable. Weekend working and being able to respond to out-of-hours call outs in the event of emergencies is a requirement of the role, so a flexible approach to working hours is essential.
