A position exists for an experienced Science Writer with a strong scientific background to lead the science communications activities of the European Graphene Flagship. This is a ten years, one Billion Euros initiative bringing together 150 academic and industrial partners in 23 countries.
The position will be based at the Cambridge Graphene Centre, a founding partner of the Flagship, and will require close interaction and frequent travel to Chalmers University of Technology, where the central administration of the EU Flagship, including marketing and dissemination, is based.
The role will involve creating content for the communication activities of the EU flagship as a whole. Communication and dissemination of the results of this public investment is of paramount importance to justify the unprecedented level of funding and to ensure the results are widely known outside the specialized scientific community.
The role holder will produce original content for a variety of outreach, communication, media, and dissemination activities. This will require creating, writing and editing newsletters, press releases, case studies, and annual reports translating the technical and specialist science and technology output of the Flagship into content accessible to various audiences, from the general public, to funding agencies, various types of media, as well as academics and industrialists.
The role holder will also maintain and update the content of the website and several social media, working with research staff to prepare articles and videos/podcasts for target audiences.
The role holder will be required to interface with media across the EU and worldwide, as well as funding agencies, politicians and others. Given that the scientific output of the Flagship is several hundreds publications per year, there is the need to create and cover multiple stories every week.
The role is partly funded by the Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC), and it is expected that approximately 10% of the time will be devoted to similar activities for the CGC.
A degree in a relevant science area is required. A PhD is desirable in subjects like Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or Nanotechnology and/or an appropriate professional qualification in public relations or journalism and practical knowledge and experience of key media relations activities. A proven track-record as an editor/science writer in major scientific journals would be highly desirable, as well as experience in public relations and journalism. A significant amount of travel, including at short notice, will be required.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
