Research Associate (Fixed Term)

University of Cambridge Department of Veterinary Medicine West Cambridge Site Research Associate

Salary: £ 31,604 - £ 38,833

Limit of Tenure: 12 months

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate position, funded by the Isaac Newton Trust, on a project aiming to investigate the causality of relationships between parasitic gastrointestinal helminths and the commensal microbial flora, in a sheep model of parasite gastroenteritis.

The main focus of the research will be understanding whether parasite-associated qualitative and quantitative changes in gut microbiota composition and metabolism are caused by direct interactions of the gut microbial flora with helminth parasites or, indirectly, by changes in mucosal immunity as a response to parasite infections. This post will be based in Cambridge and the project will be led by Dr Cinzia Cantacessi, together with collaborators at the Moredun Research Institute (Edinburgh). This project will use high-throughput microbiome sequencing data and metabolomics techniques in the first instance, but could also involve the use of RNA-Seq and quantitative microscopy techniques depending on the applicant's strengths and interests.

The main duties will include:

To take a lead role in the analysis of high-throughput microbiome sequencing data
To work with collaborators to integrate sequencing data with available information from immunological assays
To take an active role in sample preparation for quantitative microscopy work and subsequent data analyses;
To be involved in the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals.

Applicants should have a PhD in computational biology, microbiology, parasitology or a related discipline. Highly desirable skills will be experience with next generation sequencing data and programming skills in Unix, Python or Perl, and R. A good understanding of parasite biology and immunology would be an advantage. The candidate must value teamwork and collaboration, and have good administrative and interpersonal skills.

Closing date 11th March 2018

Interviews will be held on 27th March 2018

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
