Senior Research Laboratory Technician

A part time technician is required to work with Dr Eves-van den Akker in the Department of Plant Sciences in central Cambridge.

The successful candidate will be involved in technical support of molecular biology laboratory work. Day to day tasks will include the growth of plants (transgenic and non-transgenic) and the maintenance of plant-parasitic nematode stocks for experimental purposes. The successful candidate will conduct plant transformations, genotype and phenotype transgenic material, carry out plant-nematode infection assays, record data, and provide results. These tasks will employ aseptic techniques to culture plants, extract DNA/RNA, and perform PCRs and microscopy. The role will require ability to set up experiments under minimal supervision with due care and attention. The successful candidate will be responsible for following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks.

Educated to at least A level (or equivalent) in a biological subject, it is essential you have practical experience of laboratory technician/biological scientific research work, previous experience of maintaining plants in sterile tissue culture and previous experience of plant care in a scientific environment (ideally Arabidopsis and/or Solanum) and experience with molecular biology methods. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of facts, principles, processes and general concepts related to Laboratory Technician work with high degree of precision and accuracy.

Limited funding: The funds for this post are available until 30 April 2023 in the first instance. The post cannot start until 1st May 2018.
