Gas sensors play a key role in monitoring urban pollution, indoor air quality and industrial processes. Semiconducting metal oxides (MOx) have dominated the chemiresistive commercial gas sensing market for decades but have drawbacks in response time and power consumption. This project will investigate a new generation of 2-dimenstional (2D) materials beyond graphene. Strong electron interaction and large surface area of these novel semiconducting 2D materials make them highly sensitive to chemical changes and therefore, very attractive for new generation of electrochemical and chemiresistive gas sensing.
The aim of this project is to address the limitations of traditional MOx sensors by nano-engineering these 2D materials for a thin-film sensor platform with superior sensing ability. By adopting scalable nanomanufacturing strategies, the project targets the development of low cost, high performance gas sensors that could be exploited for consumer grade indoor air quality monitoring. This will require nanomaterials synthesis, processing, characterization, various deposition technologies, device fabrication and integration towards detection of specific gases.
The candidate will be a member of the Hybrid Nanomaterials Engineering research group (http://hne.eng.cam.ac.uk) at the Cambridge Graphene Centre (https://www.graphene.cam.ac.uk) and will be supervised by Dr Tawfique Hasan. The project will have a strong collaboration with Alphasense Ltd (http://www.alphasense.com), a leader in sensors for air-quality monitoring. For this project, interaction with existing research collaborators within and outside the UK is also envisaged.
Applicants should have (or expect to obtain by the start date) at least a good 2.1 degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related subject.
This studentship will pay full University fees and a maintenance allowance of at least £14,582 per year for UK students. EU citizens are eligible for a fees only award.
