Cryo-EM Facility Technician (Fixed Term)

The Department of Biochemistry houses a newly established state-of-the-art Cryo Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) facility that offers equipment and expertise to the research groups within the Department, particularly Structural Biology, external academics, commercial users and other Departments in the University. The facility currently has Talos Arctica 200 kV and Titan Krios 300 kV electron microscopes and associated equipment for sample preparation and Cryo-EM data processing. Structural Biology in the Department comprises ~18 research groups, all of which rely on the facilities and expertise provided.

Applications are invited for the post of Cryo-EM Facility Technician to join the Cryo-EM Facility team. The post-holder will assist the Cryo-EM Facility Manager and staff in running of the facility by supporting the users to run their experiments on the Cryo-EM instruments, by helping to maintain the equipment in good working order, and by upholding efficient and functional infrastructure of the facility.

The post-holder will ideally have some prior experience of working within a facility environment in supporting users with a wide range of experience levels. In addition, strong inter-personal skills and a willingness to help facility users with their problems in a proactive and responsive manner are required.

Minimum qualifications for the role are a BTEC HNC/D or equivalent in physics or a biological science. The successful candidate will have appropriate laboratory experience in the areas described above. Experience of working with Cryo-Electron Microscopes is desirable but not essential, training will be provided.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.
