The Department of Biochemistry houses a newly established state-of-the-art Cryo Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) facility that offers equipment and expertise to the research groups within the Department, particularly Structural Biology, external academics, commercial users, and other Departments in the University. The facility currently has Talos Arctica 200 kV and Titan Krios 300 kV electron microscopes and associated equipment for sample preparation and Cryo-EM data processing. Structural Biology in the Department comprises ~18 research groups, all of which rely on the facilities and expertise provided.
We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and enthusiastic staff member. The role-holder will assist the Cryo-EM Facility Manager in the running of the facility by supporting the users to run experiments on the Cryo-EM instruments and on sample preparation equipment, maintaining the equipment, and by upholding efficient and functional infrastructure of the facility.
The successful candidate should have (or be close to completing) a PhD in Structural Biology, Electron Microscopy or a related field. The post-holder will ideally have a knowledge of the Linux-based operating systems and relevant software for single particle Cryo-EM data analysis. Previous experience and practical knowledge in the operation of Cryo Electron Microscopes for single particle analysis and/or tomography would be an advantage but training will be provided if necessary.
In addition to having excellent technical competence, the successful candidate will be highly motivated and adaptable and will be expected to interact positively and effectively with a wide variety of facility users, i.e. postdoctoral and postgraduates researchers, academics, industrial visitors and undergraduates.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 36 months in the first instance.
