Marie Curie ITN Early Stage Researcher (Fixed Term)

A PhD studentship and a research position is available from April 2018 working in the Department of Plant Sciences under the supervision of Dr Ian Henderson.

The Department is a world leading centre for the study of plant biology, from the molecular scale to the landscape. The Henderson laboratory investigates genetic and epigenetic control of meiotic recombination in plant genomes ( The MEICOM ESR will work within the Henderson group and investigate control of meiotic recombination hotspots in crop genomes, including hexaploid wheat. Through this work they will obtain a cutting-edge training in molecular biology, genetics, genomics and computational approaches, relevant to basic understanding of plant genomes, in addition to advanced crop breeding.

Essential requirements; Candidates should have a first class degree in relevant subject area completed within the last 4 years. Candidates must not be in possession of a Ph.D. Knowledge and relevant experience of molecular biology, genetics, genomics, plant biology, crop genetics, immunocytology and computational biology are an advantage. Enthusiasm for basic science and high degree of self-motivation are required along with ability to work as part of a team and communicate effectively.

The candidate is expected to register as a full-time PhD student and study for the degree. However, the position also has the benefits of becoming an employee of the University. The successful candidate will be eligible to pay staff rate tuition fees for the PhD.

The salary will comprise a living allowance of €44,895.96 and a mobility allowance of €7,200.00. An additional allowance of €6,000.00 may be payable but is dependent on individual family circumstances.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance.
