Applications are invited for the new post of Head of Researcher Development at the University of Cambridge. This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for an ambitious strategist and leader to shape the future direction and growth of a central service that is critical to the successful career progression of over 10,000 researchers. Following rapid expansion in the scope and quality of researcher development provision within the last three years, this new role will enable us to continue to drive forward innovation and improvement. You will lead a team of five Researcher Developers and additional supporting staff who work within our Researcher Development Programme (www.rdp.cam.ac.uk) and will be responsible for their management and success.
This dynamic and varied role will require you to balance strategic development and operational delivery. You will coordinate the RDP team and ensure that the requirements of researchers are met within the resources that are available. At the University level you will improve the co-ordination and communication of activities across the University, lead the development (with University Information Services) of appropriate technological tools to improve the quality of information available concerning researcher development activities, and encourage colleagues in professional and academic departments to engage in quality enhancement. You will be the representative for Cambridge on a national and international stage, sharing ideas and promoting best practice within top universities. In addition you will deliver high quality developmental activities, both face-to-face and online, to our researchers from across all disciplines and levels of academic experience within the University.
You will be an excellent communicator, an influencer and a leader who can demonstrate your personal capabilities and areas of strength within contexts ranging from workshops to committees to large-scale events. You will be ready for the challenge of a constantly changing workplace and a force for positive change in response to your evaluation of the current situation. You will be able to communicate and bridge the gaps between researchers, academics and professional staff, challenging their assumptions and engaging them with a clear, deliverable and inspiring vision for researcher development.
Extensive experience of teaching in higher education and / or leading high-quality professional development within a higher education setting are essential; a proven record of success in managing people and projects within a higher education setting is highly desirable. You should be able to analytically review complex information, be creative in implementing new ideas and an effective project manager. You will have the necessary experience and confidence to work on the development of a range of new resources and initiatives. In essence, this is a role in which you will be able to demonstrate that you have the capabilities that RDP encourages Cambridge researchers to learn and apply, and through that make a real difference to thousands of students and postdocs within one of the world's leading Universities.
