Senior Research Laboratory Technician (Part Time, Fixed Term)


The Department of Plant Sciences is seeking to appoint a technician to carry out experimental work within Professor Alison Smith's research group, supporting several projects in algal synthetic biology and biotechnology. The successful candidate will be involved with generation, maintenance and characterisation of transgenic micro-algae lines.

Day to day tasks include growth and maintenance of algae cultures, conducting algae transformations, phenotyping of algae lines, recording data and providing results. These tasks will employ aseptic techniques to culture cells, extract DNA/RNA, and perform PCRs and confocal microscopy. The role will require ability to set up experiments under minimal supervision with due care and attention. The successful candidate will be responsible for following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks.

The ideal candidate will have a HNC-Level or equivalent qualification in a biological subject with experience in academic or commercial molecular biology, tissue culture, genetics and microbiology laboratories. Experience in confocal microscopy would be advantageous. It is important that the applicant has communication and interpersonal skills at a level that allows clear understanding between all group members and the role- holder.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 years in the first instance.
