A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on the development of numerical tools for planning high-intensity focussed ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for the ablation of tumours in patients. This is an exciting new non-invasive treatment for a range of tumour types, and this research will contribute to the more effective treatment by developing numerical models of the process that can be used in treatment planning. This project is a collaboration between University of Cambridge and University College London.
Research will focus on the development and analysis of fast and accurate coupled finite element/boundary element methods for ultrasound, and the developed tools will build on the open-source FEniCS (https://fenicsproject.org) and Bempp (https://bempp.com) libraries. There will be opportunities for extended research stays at University College London to work with other members of the research team.
The successful candidate will have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in engineering, applied mathematics or related area. They will be responsible for the development of new computer models, and will need to interact with other members of the project team and participate in project meetings. Experience in the development of finite element or boundary element methods is essential. Demonstrated software engineering skills are desirable, and experience working with FEniCS or Bempp would be an advantage.
The post holder will be located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,728 - £30,688, Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2020 in the first instance.
