Job Opportunities

Assistant to the Systematics Section Supervisor[Temporary Cover] (Part Time Maternity Cover)

We are looking to appoint a part-time horticultural assistant, three days per week job-share position, to cover Maternity Leave, within the Botanic Garden's Systematics Section.

Systematics Section is one of seven sections that comprise the Garden's Horticultural team. Each Section is responsible for caring for specific areas of the Garden and their related plant collections. The Systematics Section comprises approximately 150 individual beds of herbaceous plants, laid out in family order to demonstrate plant classification and relationships between plant families. The beds are laid out in a unique manner and are of great heritage importance. They provide an important resource for research and education purposes within the Garden and University. They are formal in appearance and thus require high standards of plant care, horticultural maintenance and curation.

The role-holder reports directly to the Section Supervisor on daily and weekly work plans, progress and developments within the Section. They assist in providing guidance to one Trainee Horticultural Technician assigned to the Section, along with occasional work experience students/volunteers and deputise for the Section Supervisor as required.

The Systematic Section is currently undergoing major restructure, following a Monument Trust grant to develop and interpret the beds. The successful applicant will join the team at a critical time of the development and will be assisting with horticultural elements of this project including turfing, re-shaping and re-planting.

The candidate should be educated to at least GCSE level, hold a National Certificate in Horticulture, or equivalent, and have suitable professional horticultural experience.

Closing Date: Sunday 7 January 2018 Interviews: week commencing 22 January 2018

Maternity cover: This post is fixed-term for 12 months or the return of the post holder, whichever is the earlier.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
