The Cambridge Advanced Imaging Centre (CAIC) is recruiting for an enthusiastic and highly skilled electron microscopist to lead the EM unit within the centre. The role will provide advanced electron microscopy research as a service within CAIC and further develop the current provision as a state-of the-art facility for the School of Biological Sciences.
CAIC currently has two high value Electron Microscopes (one SEM and one TEM, valued at approximately £1.5m) with the intention to further improve and update the facility. The role holder will be responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive research service with particular emphasis on the provision of advanced EM preparation and imaging of biological samples. This scientific service will include training researchers in advanced techniques and researching new techniques in response to emerging areas in the University research portfolio.
You will be responsible for managing a small team of technicians and maintaining a productive laboratory environment for electron microscopy. In parallel to these duties you will be expected to network effectively within the EM community, both locally and nationally, raising awareness of the centre's capabilities and ensuring complementarity with other facilities.
You should have a PhD (or equivalent level qualification) in a life or a physical science along with significant experience with electron microscopy and related techniques such as EDX and its implementation in biology and biomaterials applications. You should also have significant experience with electron microscopy maintenance and liaising with manufacturers as necessary. You will have excellent analytic, problem-solving and interpersonal skills and be able to work independently at the highest level whilst managing a technical team.
Significant experience in a research environment is essential.
Appointment to Senior Research Associate is subject to approval from the Faculty Board of Biological Sciences.
