Applications are invited for the post of Senior Nutritional Biomarker Specialist to play a key role in establishing a new Nutritional Biomarker Laboratory (NBL) focused on the development and application of methods for nutritional biomarker analysis. The NBL is part of the MRC Epidemiology Unit, a department within the University of Cambridge's School of Clinical Medicine and is situated on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
This post is part of a new research theme funded through the NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) which aims to investigate the role that dietary, nutritional and lifestyle factors have in the causes of life-long diseases such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease and, in doing so, provide evidence for preventative action. The theme involves setting up a co-ordinated platform for the measurement of diet, physical activity and nutrition to provide expertise and capacity in this specialist area which will support multiple research groups working in the UK and internationally.
The post holder will be responsible for the set up and running of the nutritional biomarker platforms for studies, surveys, natural experiments and trials. The role will give the opportunity to establish a new analytical team that will be responsible for the day-to-day routine analyses and associated method development. The post holder will be responsible for establishing and maintaining high quality nutritional biomarker analysis using HPLC, LC-MS/MS and nutritional biochemical methods.
The initial focus will be on establishing the nutritional biomarker measurements of the National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme (NDNS RP), which will require transfer of relevant methods from the MRC Elsie Widdowson Laboratory to the NBL on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
The post holder will recommend assay methods, lead implementation, troubleshoot and resolve problems in a wide range of specialist nutritional biomarker analysis (by HPLC, LC-MS/MS and nutritional biochemistry), interact with sub-contracting laboratories for (non)-nutritional biomarker analyses that are integral to customer requirements, prepare substantive technical reports and contribute to publications using nutritional biomarkers. They will coordinate the workload of the NBL, plan and schedule multiple projects to meet customer deadlines, advise on and negotiate timelines where necessary. They will also set up quality assurance and control processes focused on the medical laboratory accreditation (ISO 15189) standards to provide customers and wider stakeholders with the necessary assurance on the quality of measurement within the NBL.

The successful candidate will have a qualification in analytical, bioanalytical or related science. A higher degree/PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant specialist subject area is desirable. Applicants will have proven skills in development, validation and application of routine analytical methods based on HPLC, LC-MS/MS or clinical/nutritional biochemistry and a track record in clinical or nutritional biomarker analysis.
