Help in the development of new metagenomics methodology.
The position is part of large collaborative grant (involving the Departments of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, The University of Edinburgh and the Roslin Institute) with the aim of understanding antimicrobial resistance (AMR) gene transfer between pathogens and the gut microbiota in experimental animals and in livestock. This ambitious, multi-disciplinary project will harness cutting-edge chromosome conformation capture genome sequencing (meta3C and Hi-C) to investigate transfer of AMR genes within complex microbiomes and identify unculturable bacterial species that are involved in AMR spread. Dr Mark Holmes is the principle investigator of the grant with Dr Andrew Grant, Dr Olivier Restif, Dr Dan Tucker, Professor James Wood, Professor Duncan Maskell, Professor Mark Stevens and Professor Sharon Peacock as co-investigators. You will be part of a lab with many other infectious disease and AMR projects running alongside as part of a stimulating and highly productive research community.
Working in a team of four, of which you will be an integral part. It is essential that you are flexible, willing and capable of working both on your own and importantly as part of a multidisciplinary group. In particular, the role of the post holder will be to work with two additional scientists on the molecular microbiology aspects of the project. Candidates should hold a degree and/or a PhD in microbiology, molecular biology or a closely related discipline. Experience in genomic DNA preparation and next generation sequencing will be advantageous. The candidate must value teamwork and collaboration, have good administrative and interpersonal skills, and high computer literacy in relation to analysis of DNA sequences and the use of basic bioinformatics software. They may be required to assist with the work of PhD students and undergraduate project students. They will help with sub-projects arising from the main research including the investigation of factors affecting antimicrobial resistance such as novel antimicrobial resistance genes.
An appointment could be made at Research Associate (PhD in Molecular Microbiology or a relevant discipline and/or experience relevant to microbial genomics), or Research Assistant level (Degree in Molecular Microbiology or a related discipline).
