As part of a CRUK Advanced Clinician Scientist award, a new bioinformatics/software development opportunity, working with Dr Serena Nik-Zainal has arisen. The postholder will have primary responsibility of running the bioinformatics systems within this dynamic and versatile team. The team first developed within the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and subsequently moved to the Department of Medical Genetics in the Clinical School at the University of Cambridge in order to further the biological and mechanistic understanding underpinning mutational signatures as well as to take their academic work towards clinical applications.
The successful candidate will be embedded in a multidisciplinary team, will lead on bioinformatics support, will interact with wet-lab as well as dry-lab scientists, pipelining new approaches, software and wrap-around infrastructure to support the team. In addition, the candidate will interact with current web developers in relation to the development of a public-facing website and database that will serve as a resource for mutational signatures. A dynamic individual who can bring new ideas/tools to this up-and-coming area and who is in search of novel technologies to improve bioinformatics systems will be highly valued.
The successful candidate will have:
- a Degree in Bioinformatics or Computer Science (or equivalent)
- strong statistical and quantitative skills
- excellent programming skills
- experience of processing and analysing Next Generation sequencing data
- experience working, developing and compiling software tools in a UNIX/LINUX environment
- familiarity with statistical modeling and software and experience with large data sets.
He/ she will enjoy working as part of a team but be experienced with managing own workload and will be able to communicate ideas and results effectively.
