The Clinical School Computing Service (CSCS) is looking for an articulate, self-motivated and proactive individual to join the Infrastructure Team.
CSCS is a department of 33 staff and is one of the largest IT departments at the University of Cambridge. We pride ourselves on having a friendly and collaborative atmosphere and an ethos of professionalism and excellent customer service. Our specialist teams support over 3,100 users based on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus and six other sites within the wider University. We provide infrastructure, client support and development services as well as directly supporting the teaching and administrative functions in the Clinical School.
Our Infrastructure Team is a team of eight that manages the network and server/storage infrastructure. Within the Infrastructure Team, the Network Team undertakes the design, implementation, commissioning and testing of network infrastructure including switches, routers and fibre networks, and is responsible for information security infrastructure including anti-virus systems and firewalls. It is responsible for a network supporting 4,800 devices spread across seven locations including the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, as well as the connection between our two geographically dispersed data centres. It also works with other members of CSCS to resolve all networking related issues.
The successful candidate will actively contribute to the development and the improvement of the IT infrastructure, with particular responsibility for networks including network design, installation and maintenance, security and firewalls, and wireless infrastructure. S/he will also provide some third line support with occasional evening and weekend work. There is a limited requirement for being on-call for out-of-hours emergencies (approximately 1 week in 7).
Applicants are expected to hold a relevant qualification or be able to demonstrate a comparable level of skill and experience, and have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The chosen candidate must have demonstrable knowledge and significant experience in at least 2 of the following areas:
Data and voice networks
Cisco network equipment
Network security technologies (e.g. Cisco, Fortinet and Sophos)
Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory enterprise environments, VMware, Python and Linux is also desirable. The successful candidate will ideally have experience of developing new systems and services. Additionally, s/he is required to have experience of liaising with contractors and working according the principles of project management.
Starting salary is dependent on experience and ability and is expected to be in the range of £29,799 - £31,604 with annual increments up to £38,833 after which further annual increments are available for exceptional work. In addition, we can offer you:
