PhD Studentship: Using Informatics to Understand Drug Action

Applications are invited for a 4-year BBSRC Industrial CASE studentship in the research group led by Dr Andreas Bender to work on a project, co-funded by Eli Lilly, as part of the Cambridge BBSRC Doctoral Training Programme. The project will aim to utilise diverse cheminformatics and bioinformatics data sources, with a particular emphasis on gene expression data, to identify drug targets and understand the modes of action of compounds in biological systems. In a subsequent phase of the project, prospective tests will be performed, i.e. the compounds identified will be tested in a disease system of relevance to the industrial sponsor. This project is embedded into wider research programmes of both the academic research group as well as Eli Lilly, so that the person selected for this post will be able to benefit from a wide range of expertise present both in the University and the company.

The studentship will include regular placements at Eli Lilly's UK research site, which will enable the student to learn directly from working in an industrial environment.

Applicants should have (or expect to obtain) the equivalent of a UK first class or upper second-class honours degree (and preferably a Masters degree) in either a relevant natural science (e.g. chemistry, pharmacology, biochemistry, molecular biology) or computer science/related fields (such as bioinformatics), with working knowledge of (or a strong interest in) the respective other field. Expertise in the areas of scientific programming (Python, C, Perl, or other languages), statistical analysis, pathway databases, and data mining packages (such as R, Scikit-learn, Matlab) would be very beneficial, as would be a general scientific understanding of chemical and biological information-gathering and an interest in drug discovery chemistry.

The studentship will provide a maintenance grant and tuition fees at the UK/EU rate, and is available to UK and EU students who meet the UK residency requirements of the Research Councils. Students from EU countries who do not meet the residency requirements may be eligible for a fees-only award. Owing to funding restrictions imposed by the sponsor, non-EU citizens cannot be considered.
