Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for up to 21 months in the first instance. A Research Associate position is available within the Materials Chemistry Group in a project funded by INNOVATE UK, to carry out focused research and development work to commercialise a technology developed in the research group for recovering spent redox active pastes from lead acid batteries. The aim is to make very active nano-structured precursors for making new batteries with improved performance. The selected candidate will work very closely with the industrial partners Aurelius Environmental Group (AEL), Tipton, UK and Antares Reciclagm (AR) & Tudor Batteries (TB), both in Brazil. The main objectives of the project at University of Cambridge is to develop strategies for controlling contaminants in the final battery precursors, fabricate laboratory scale cells using the new precursors and test the cells for performance. The selected candidate will have knowledge of battery electro-chemistry and expertise in techniques such as electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, surface and interfacial analysis, chemical and thermal analysis for characterizing battery components; fabricating laboratory scale cells; and testing of batteries for performance. The post will be primarily located in the Department of Materials Science in Cambridge, UK, but may be required to spend a proportion of time with the industrial collaborator AEL, who hold the global licence for the technology and sited in Tipton and also make occasional visits to the partners in Brazil.
