Governance and Ethics Manager (Fixed Term)

The NIHR BioResource for Translational Research encompasses the NIHR BioResource, NIHR BioResource - Rare Diseases, and NIHR Rare Diseases Translational Research Collaboration and will provide the major, nationally-accessible, resource of volunteers from the general population, patients with common disease and rare diseases. Recruits will have consented to be recalled according to their genotype and/or phenotype for academic and industry-led experimental medicine and clinical research studies. The project aims to provide a unique and powerful resource for studying disease mechanisms and for characterising the benefits and limitations of emerging therapies. This will lead towards future trials and studies that incorporate disease mechanistic knowledge and that are personalising therapies based on stratifying patients/individuals at risk of disease by disease-associated phenotypes.

The NIHR BioResource for Translational Research requires a Governance and Ethics Manager to lead and manage the regulatory, ethical, legal and governance framework structure which will mean establishing appropriate ethical approval for all sites involved in the recruitment and recall of participants through the NIHR BioResource. The post holder must ensure systematic maintenance of the governance of the portfolio of studies and ensure that all projects are undertaken in accordance with the requirements of EU and UK statutory regulations and principles of good clinical practice. The role holder will lead a small team to achieve these aims, recruiting more staff if necessary as the role expands. The role involves engagement with a wide range of internal and external staff, for example staff members from all BioResources that make-up the NIHR BioResource, as well as researchers applying to use the NIHR BioResource for their studies (data/sample/recall), therefore the role holder must possess excellent communication skills.

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level, or have an equivalent qualification or experience, and will have experience of ethical and regulatory issues related to health/medical research. They must have submitted applications and amendments to NHS RECs, and have sought appropriate approvals to run research studies from HRA or NHS R&D Departments. They must have experience of writing research protocols, information leaflets, consent forms, questionnaire design and experience of recruitment to research studies or clinical trials. They must have experience of supervising or managing staff, with experience of motivating a busy team. They must have experience of data management and excellent IT skills, with exceptional attention to detail. They must be able to prioritise their workload, delegate tasks to other staff members, respond rapidly to colleagues, and have experience talking to patients/volunteers/members of the public.

The funds for these posts are available until 31st March 2022.
