A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Nanoscience Centre at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, to carry out work on BP-ICAM-funded research on asphaltene aggregation and deposition. The role will involve liaising with researchers in the Nanoscience Centre, the BP Institute and the Chemistry Department at Cambridge as well as Imperial College, London, the University of Manchester and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, who are working together on this problem. The post holder will combine the research findings, both experimental and modelling of these groups and use them to build up an integrated model of asphaltene aggregation in solution and subsequent deposition on oil-exposed surfaces.
The post holder will be located in the Nanoscience Centre in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
The key responsibilities and duties are to carry out the contracted research, to help write reports on this research and to assist in the running of Dr Durkan's research group.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: has (or is close to obtaining) a PhD in Physics, Chemistry or a related subject. Knowledge of surface chemistry and interactions between molecular species and surfaces is essential, either from an experimental or a modelling perspective. Knowledge of asphaltene science is desirable. Previous experience in integrating knowledge and learning from disparate fields covering modelling and experimental angles is desirable. Must be a good communicator and be flexible in working with others. Previous experience of engaging with industry would be beneficial. Experience of leading research as a postdoctoral researcher is also preferable.

Research Associate: £31,604 - £38,833
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
