Computer Officer (Windows System Administrator) (Fixed Term)


There is an opportunity for a Windows System Administrator who is well-organised with problem-solving abilities to join the IT support team at the MRC Biostatistics Unit based on the Biomedical Campus Site, Cambridge.

The BSU operates a multi platform infrastructure (Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris) and currently has a total of ~120 deployed systems, including a broad range of software and support of servers, compute engines as well as desktop facilities. The key responsibility of the role-holder will be to support and upgrade the current Windows infrastructure within network environment, including exploring cloud based services.

Applicants should at least have a degree in a numerate subject (or equivalent experience) with a proven ability to have configured, implementation and administration of Windows Server roles 2008 and above.

Applicants must have experience in configuring and installing Windows Active Directory (including DNS) services, print server role. This will include configuring other roles available within Windows server operating systems. They should be experienced in managing Windows Exchange server and will assist with the migration to Exchange online. They have experience in deployment of Windows desktop using third party /Microsoft tools to apply software updates to desktops and servers. Using group policy and scripting (PowerShell) to customise user profiles and manage roaming profiles. They should understand how the third party storage system integrates into Windows platform (CIFS).

The role holder will also manage the server licensing. They will have the opportunity to familiarise and administer a third party product that manages licenses, inventory and asset management. They should be able to monitor the systems and provide backup solution.

There will be opportunity to be involved in other infrastructure services. This includes of network services hosted on virtualised VMWare platform and network storage NetApp.

Principle day to day duties will include coordination of IT support services for the research staff, administration staff and visitors. This will include Installation, maintenance and support for the heterogeneous environment for servers and desktops.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate a good blend of technical, influencing and interpersonal skills. The post holder must be able to communicate effectively with team members, research staff as well as visitors and administration staff. The chosen candidate will be expected to have time management skills and take accountability for the delivery of projects. They will also be expected to play a full role as part of a successful team maintaining and building new IT services for the Unit.
