Research Assistant/Associate in Geotechnical Engineering (Fixed Term)

A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on the EPSRC project WindAfrica. Outstanding applicants are sought to carry out high-quality research, ultimately aiming to provide design guidelines for the foundations of wind turbines in unsaturated soils. The post is funded by a major EPSRC Global Challenge Research Fund grant (EP/P029434/1) entitled "Performance-based design of foundations of wind turbines in Africa (WindAfrica)". The project is in collaboration with Durham University, University of Pretoria (South Africa), University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), University of Khartoum (Sudan) and several industrial partners.

The research project focuses on the foundation systems of wind turbines on unsaturated soils; the ultimate goal is to make available to the engineering community an efficient and effective tool that can be used for design and analysis of wind turbine foundations in unsaturated soils. The main focus of this advertised post is to plan and perform laboratory testing on unsaturated soil samples to understand the dynamic response of pile foundations in unsaturated soil. Close collaboration with the other project partners will be essential for formulating a set of design guidelines for wind turbine foundations on unsaturated expansive soils. For detailed information about the Key Responsibilities of the post and the Person's Profile please refer to Further Information Sheet HR7.

The post holder will be primarily located in Central Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK. However, please note that the post holder may be required to travel to Sudan and/or South Africa, and spend significant time on either/both countries to organise and supervise the sample acquisition and/or storage.
