A position exists for a Research Assistant Software Engineer in the Department of Engineering to work in the Physical Computation Laboratory on the "Grapples" project.
The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
The key responsibilities and duties are to implement algorithms developed as part of an ongoing research effort, in order to deploy those algorithms as a web-based tool for engineering students. The user interface of the tool will be built on Blockly, an open-source graphical platform that makes it easy to provide a graphical interface for traditional text-based programming languages. The graphical interface will serve as a front-end to generating programs for target computing platforms (e.g., Raspberry Pi or BBC micro:bit), as well as a front-end to let students associate program variables with a set of standard physical signals. The role holder will implement algorithms for checking units of measure in programs, based on the information obtained from the graphical interface and algorithms for checking physical invariants in computations involving physical signals. These techniques will be automated and implemented underneath the graphical programming interface. The role holder will catalog a library of physical invariants that are relevant to the signals from common sensors. The catalog of invariants will provide a starting point that educators using the Grapples system will be able to build upon when designing teaching exercises.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,728 - £30,688
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 6 months in the first instance.
