Applications are invited for a Junior Computational Biologist to join the microarray and sequencing facility Cambridge Genomic Services (CGS), part of Prof. Nabeel Affara's research group at the Department of Pathology. This position is an opportunity for a junior bioinformatician to acquire experience working in a core service lab as part of a growing team and building knowledge across a variety of genomic applications. As part of the bioinformatics support team, your role will be to handle the day-to-day analysis of data generated on the microarray and sequencing platforms. The analysis pipelines the candidate would be responsible for are gene expression profiling on Affymetrix arrays, RNA-seq at gene and transcript levels, non-coding RNA, micro RNA profiling (Toray arrays) as well as methylation analysis on both arrays and sequencing platforms. The role will also involve more bespoke work required by some users of the facility and will require meeting with customers.
The successful candidate will have to develop and maintain pipelines for the analysis and delivery of data to the facility users. This includes the development of tools that generate reports automatically including an analysis summary as well as "publication grade" graphs and integration of those into our LIMS system. Ideally, the candidate will have a good knowledge of the statistical analysis and the relevant statistical theory and tools needed to carry out these tasks. Communication is a key aspect of the post; the candidate will be in direct contact with users of the facility and must be able to communicate efficiently with the rest of the team. The candidate must also be able to troubleshoot problems and liaise with the technical support team.
The requirements of the job role are as follows: BSc or MPhil in computational biology, computer science or biology (with experience in statistical data analysis); a strong background in statistical analysis; experience with scripting language: Python or Perl; experience with R scripting and Bioconductor; experience with LINUX based systems; ability to design and maintain analysis pipelines; knowledge of the analysis microarray data and next-generation sequencing data is a plus; knowledge of reporting tool (Rmarkdown, TeX) is a plus; ability to work independently and as part of a team and strong organisational and communication skills.
Funding: A two year contract until the 31st March 2019.
