A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate to design, fabricate and validate quantum dot-based smart lighting systems, as part of an EPSRC-funded project.
Colloidal Quantum Dots (cQD) are attracting significant interest as the key components for next-generation smart displays/lightings based on LED, photo detectors and image sensors, solar cells, and electronics/optoelectronics. This is because they show excellent and unique physical properties such as i) high sensitivity and quantum efficiency, ii) excellent colour gamut with narrow emission (absorption) bandwidths, iii) colour tunability/band gap engineering through size control, iv) high photostability and v) high air stability as they are based on inorganic materials. cQD backlight for LCD displays is in the market since 2015 under the brand name of Quantum Dot displays (e.g. Samsung SUHD TV). This application in lighting and display technology has been driven by the high colour purity and brightness that photoluminescent (PL) cQD offer, as compared to traditional phosphors and OLED.
The candidate for this position will focus on the materials aspects, covering a wide range of nano materials such as quantum dot or nano composites and its interface science and process technology. They will develop research on how to develop a process for precise scalable cQD emissive layers and how to design, fabricate and optimise multilayer device structures with controlled film profiles of both emissive and charge transport layers, including their high yield integration and characterisation.
The successful candidate will have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field. They will have a proven track record of collaborating with experimental groups. They will have demonstrable knowledge and experience of experiment techniques in electronics, microfabrication and photonics.
Salary Range - Research Assistant: £25,298 - £30,175, Research Associate: £30,175 - £38,183
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
