Research Facilitator (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for the position of Research Facilitator. The scope of the role is to work with the academics across the Faculty of Mathematics, mainly those in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) but also those in Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics.

The remit of Research Facilitation is to support and develop the research strategy in DAMTP by increasing the number and quality of research grant applications and reducing the administrative burden associated with the initiation and continuation of funded research projects, as well as contributing to departmental responses to external initiatives and assessment activities.

The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree in mathematics or related scientific subject. Experience of undertaking research in an academic or industrial setting, combined with a track record of planning and delivering scientific workshops, seminars and networking activities and experience of project management as well as experience of drafting and negotiating agreements and costing would also be desirable. For the right candidate, the opportunity may be made available to allow them to pursue their own personal research, as part of the Faculty's overall research programme.

The role holder will be expected to build and sustain relationships with all the research groups and academics represented in the Departments in order to understand their strategic priorities whilst concurrently looking for funding opportunities that would meet these needs. The role holder will provide a service to all academic staff, providing high quality support to individuals developing research applications of a superior standard, meeting all the requirements of the funding authority, getting the relevant information and permissions from those in the Department and ensuring that a fully costed proposal is put forward. The role holder will be expected to liaise with both Heads of Department and both the School and Unified Administrative Service (UAS), to ensure that the Research portfolio reflects the strategic priorities set out by the Department and support the aim of maintaining and growing grant income.

You will be expected to be pro-active and able both to prioritise and work to deadlines. You must also be able to work well independently and in a team and have a positive, proactive approach to effectively plan and coordinate events, workshops and seminars. You will have strong inter-personal and communications skills, in order to build internal and external working relationships and networks.
