Job Opportunities

Catering Assistant (Part Time)

The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences (INI) is a national and international visitor research centre running research programmes on selected mathematical themes, with applications in a very wide range of societal, scientific and technological areas. It attracts leading scientists, both from the UK and from overseas, to interact in research over extended periods. Researchers are invited personally to participate in the research programmes and/or the workshops which form part of the Institute's activities.

We are seeking to appoint a positive and friendly Catering Assistant to join a small, busy team to provide refreshments and other catering requirements to INI's visiting researchers.

The ideal candidate will have good interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to work with the minimum of supervision. The successful applicant will need to have a flexible approach to work, and be able to work out of normal office hours regularly (once a week, for approximately 20 weeks per year) to serve at the workshop wine receptions. The post is 30 hours per week.

An integral part of INI is the Turing Gateway to Mathematics (TGM), which is the Knowledge Transfer initiative of INI, working on event management projects across a wide spectrum of activities that involves research councils, academics from non-mathematical disciplines, business, industry, policy-makers etc. Although operationally independent, it works closely with the INI, and the catering assistant is required to provide refreshments for TGM events that take place at INI.

Applicants should have a good general education, with passes at Maths and English GCSE or equivalent.

Experience of working in a similar environment and dealing with senior academic staff would be useful.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
