A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering to work on a project researching the design and analysis of high-speed, compact compression systems with Dyson Ltd. The aims are to understand the aerodynamic performance limits of small compressors and to develop design rules for the ultimate high efficiency device that has adequate stability. The work will involve the application of a range of advanced experimental and computational methods. Detailed testing of various configurations manufactured by rapid prototyping will be conducted to explore the available design space. These tests will be complemented by state-of-the-art CFD to investigate the aerodynamic loss sources and to develop new designs. It is expected that the researcher will work closely with both academics in Cambridge and the research team at Dyson Ltd. They will also co-supervise research students and undergraduate projects.
The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: 1. A PhD (or close to obtaining a PhD) in turbomachinery aerodynamics or a related subject 2. Experience of using advanced CFD codes, experience of a range of experimental methods for aerodynamic testing and knowledge of turbomachinery design. 3. Ability to supervise students undertaking research, to interact with industry contacts, other researchers and technicians, to present and discuss research and to publish research papers. 4. Ability to organise own time and to independently drive research activities. 5. Some experience of the following would be beneficial: CFD of complex flow problems, detailed aerodynamic experiments, rapid prototyping and testing, knowledge of transition and turbulence models for CFD, DNS and LES.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,298 - £30,175 Research Associate: £30,175 - £38,183
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2020 in the first instance.
