Teaching Fellowship in Organic Chemistry (Fixed Term)


Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 3 years in the first instance. Starting salary will depend on previous experience.

Applications are invited for a fixed-term Teaching Fellowship in organic chemistry to be taken up by 1 October 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter. The post is available for three years, and will be held in association with an affiliation to Pembroke College.

In the Department of Chemistry the person appointed will be expected to undertake teaching duties including undergraduate and postgraduate lecturing, laboratory demonstrating, examining, marking of laboratory coursework for undergraduates, and small group teaching. Opportunities may also exist outside term and when other duties permit for the post-holder to join an existing research group within the Department and work as part of that group. No facilities or resources will be provided for independent research.

In Pembroke College the job-holder will lead small group teaching ('supervision') of undergraduates studying chemistry, especially in the first and second year, and advise chemistry students on their academic work ('Direction of Studies'); arrange supervisions in other areas of chemistry; participate in the interviewing and assessment of potential undergraduates.

Both the Department and the College are involved in outreach work to schools and colleges, and the successful candidate would be expected to be involved in this work. Particular priorities include promoting STEMM subjects and outreach to under-represented groups.

The successful applicant will have completed (or be about to complete) a PhD in Chemistry, and will have a strong record of excellence in teaching. Experience of small-group teaching would be a distinct advantage, as would be the ability to teach a range of subjects covered in the first (Part IA) and second year (Part IB) of the Chemistry course (details at http://www.ch.cam.ac.uk/teaching/course-guides).

This position would suit a person seeking to pursue a career in teaching in further or higher education: it is not an entry-level research post.
