The University of Cambridge is one of the world's top research establishments. Fundamental to its continued success in world-leading research and in securing funding (over £500m last year) is the role of the Contracts Team within the University's Research Operations Office. Due to the rapid growth in research within the University's School of Clinical Medicine, we are expanding the contracts team to better support the work and research portfolio within the School of Clinical Medicine. Join the team that works with researchers conducting internationally renowned peer reviewed basic, clinical and translational research relating to a wide range of medical conditions and treatments whose strategic focuses include cancer research, cardio-vascular medicine, diabetes, endocrinology, epidemiology, genetics, neuroscience and more.
We have a number of challenging and rewarding roles available within our contracts team with responsibility for agreeing the contractual terms that govern funded research; key is a pragmatic approach to drafting terms that facilitate the partnership between the University's academic community and research collaborators, whilst assessing and managing risks.
Opportunities are available for appointment as Senior Contracts Manager (Grade 9), Contracts Manager (Grade 8) and Research Contracts Specialist (Grade 7) depending on the qualifications and relevant experience of candidates. This is an excellent opportunity to join the University of Cambridge Research Operations Office at an exciting time.
Working in partnership with the University's academic community to support its excellent research, role holders will act on behalf of the researchers and the University to negotiate a wide variety of research agreements. The role holders will need to interact with not only the University's researchers but also their collaborators and funders which include Research Councils, charities, the European Commission, start-up companies, world-wide research organisations, multi-national corporations, a wide range of industry and international governmental agencies . Our team ensures both the researchers' and the University's interests are protected by agreeing terms that safeguard both the researchers' need to publish results and pursue further research and the University's charitable and academic position. We also give due consideration of protection of results for potential commercialisation, and appropriate access to intellectual property rights for funders and collaborators.
We are looking for individuals with different levels of experience of working in a university or a research-intensive organisation, including industry and/or a law environment. People and project management experience plus a legal and/or scientific background are an advantage. Familiarity of drafting and negotiating agreements would be ideal. An understanding of the scientific research environment is also desirable.
You must be well organised and able both to prioritise and work to deadlines. You must also be able to work well independently and in a team and have a positive, can-do approach. You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills with an aptitude for developing positive working relationships. In particular you will have the ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely to a wide range of people, including the highest levels of academic, corporate and government representatives. Diplomacy, tact, attention to detail and a calm approach are essential. You will be proficient in using Microsoft IT packages. You will be educated to degree level or equivalent.
