Research Nurse, Wellcome Trust-MRC Institute of Metabolic Science (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited to join a dynamic internationally leading research team working to understand why some people gain weight more easily than others. Over the last 15 years, we have discovered a number of genes which contribute to the development of obesity and in some cases have been able to treat patients as a direct result of this research.

We are embarking upon a new series of clinical studies to look at the complications that arise in some, but not all, children and adolescents with severe obesity and are looking to expand our team as a result. The long term aim of our research is to find new genes and pathways that can be targeted to develop effective weight loss treatments. You can find out more about our research at our website www.goos.org.uk

The post will suit a person who is highly motivated and wants to help people by contributing to scientific and clinical discoveries. The post covers a range of responsibilities which include research co-ordination as well as direct involvement in clinical research studies to include recruitment of participants, obtaining informed consent, taking blood samples, performing specialist tests such as metabolic rate measurements, and assisting with MRI studies. Co-ordination duties include liaison with hospital staff and GPs to arrange collection of samples and clinical information to enable the longitudinal follow up of patients; work on cohorts of severe obesity and thinness to include the extraction, entry and monitoring of clinical data and the use of bespoke databases.

This post would suit nurses with a minimum of 2 years clinical experience post qualification who are interested in developing a career in clinical research. Experience of research methods/skills would be an advantage but is not a necessity as full training will be provided. You will require a high degree of attention to detail, excellent communication and organisational skills and be able to work independently. Adult, Paediatric and dual trained nurses are encouraged to apply.

This is a full time post funded by the Botnar Fondation.

Proposed start date: as soon as possible.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 24 months in the first instance.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check (enhanced with children and adults' barred lists) and a health assessment. This appointment also requires NMC Registration and a Research Passport application.
