Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to investigate rejuvenation of metallic glasses. The student will be a member of the research group of Professor AL Greer in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the University of Cambridge.
Metallic glasses have remarkable mechanical properties, for example having the highest damage tolerance (the product of yield stress and fracture toughness) of any engineering material. They do, however, show work softening and consequently have essentially zero ductility in tension. They are also susceptible to embrittlement. This project focuses on reducing or eliminating these problems through rejuvenation of the glassy structure. It builds directly on high-profile work (Nature 524 (2015) 200) showing that rejuvenation can be achieved by thermomechanical treatment. By such treatments, metallic glasses can reach an exceptionally wide range of energies (Nature Reviews Materials 1 (2016) 16039). The limits of possible rejuvenation and the property benefits that can be achieved remain largely unexplored, providing the motivation for this project. The project will involve fabrication of metallic glasses, and their characterization by techniques such as X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy and testing of mechanical properties.
Applicants should have (or expect to be awarded) an upper second or first class UK honours degree at the level of MSci, MEng (or overseas equivalents) in a relevant subject (Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry,) and should meet the EPSRC criteria for UK/EU residency and liability for 'home rate' fees to be eligible for a studentship.
The studentship is fully funded, covering fees and a tax-free stipend (currently set at £14,553 per annum). Applicants must satisfy the eligibility and UK Research Councils criteria for EU residency and liability for 'home rate' fees.
