Research Associate (Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a Post-doctoral Research Associate position in the group of Dr Philip Wigge at the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University, to work on a project focussed on understanding how the plant perceives warm temperature signals and integrate this information into growth and development response.

The post holder will concentrate on studying how temperature influences the process of grain fill in Brachypodium distachyon. They will liaise with other group members in the design of further experiments to test and validate hypotheses for how the developing grain senses and responds to warm temperature. This post requires candidates of exceptional ability who have excellent skills in understanding how grain development occurs. The ultimate goal of the research is to make crop plants resilient to field stress conditions and thus contribute to the economic competitiveness of the UK.

Applicants must have a PhD in plant biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field. An in depth understanding of grain fill processes in monocot plants is essential. Previous experience in performing assays to investigate grain development in a monocot system is also required, as is evidence of managing large-scale projects.

The successful candidate will be fully involved in the basic research in these areas whilst also writing up their research work for presentation and publication. The post holder may be required to assist in the supervision of student projects, provide instructions to students and deliver seminars relating to their research area. Good communication skills are essential as the post holder will need to present data to other members of the group, external collaborators and sponsor agencies (grant applications). Candidates will also need to work well in a team.

The Laboratory provides a welcoming and collaborative environment with a wide-range of family-friendly benefits and development opportunities. More about the Sainsbury Laboratory and details of what the University offers to employees, can be found at: http://www.slcu.cam.ac.uk/.
