Research Associate/Senior Research Associate x 2 (Fixed Term)

Two postdoctoral positions are available in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), Faculty of Mathematics. These are funded by an ERC Advanced Grant, entitled Active and Driven Systems: Non-equilibrium Statistical Physics (ADSNeSP), recently awarded to Prof Mike Cates FRS, the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics.

One position is available for 3 years and the other for up to 5 years. The positions are at Research Associate level (Grade 7) with the possibility of one appointment being made at Senior Research Associate level (Grade 9) for an exceptionally well qualified candidate.

Applicants will have, or be about to receive, a PhD in theoretical physics or cognate area. These positions require familiarity with the concepts and methods of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Specific experience applying these to driven and/or active matter systems would be an advantage, as would be experience with some of the following methodologies: large deviation theory; stochastic thermodynamics; field theory and path integrals; stochastic PDEs; numerical methods for hydrodynamic and stochastic continuum models; computer simulation and analytic methods for particle-based models; coarse-graining and renormalization group approaches.

Duties include developing and conducting individual and collaborative research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holders will be expected to plan and manage their own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to assist in the preparation of proposals and applications to external bodies. They must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. They may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area. In the case of an appointment being made at Senior Research Associate level, additional duties would include managing research budgets and programmes, identifying sources of funding, contributing to teaching and supervising/mentoring research students and colleagues.

Fixed-term: Funding for one position is available for 3 years and funding for the other position is available for up to 5 years in the first instance.

Informal enquiries about the positions may be made to: LE12153@maths.cam.ac.uk. Note that it is not possible to offer candidate-specific advice on whether to make a formal application.
