The Department of Zoology at the University of Cambridge, together with Sidney Sussex College, is seeking to recruit an outstanding evolutionary biologist to complement and extend our strengths in research and teaching. The successful candidate will have an excellent research record in evolutionary biology, and its interface with medicine, and will have a strong commitment to teaching.
We seek a candidate with the ambition and ability to develop a world-class research group. We shall be looking for an innovative research agenda that is well placed to benefit from the diverse interactions that are possible within our broadly interdisciplinary department, and from interactions with the wider University community. As well as giving lectures in the Department, the appointee will become a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, with responsibility for Direction of Studies in Natural Sciences and providing small-group teaching in evolutionary biology to undergraduates.
The selection criteria for this post are:
An excellent research record, documented by publication and by the demonstrated ability to attract research funding;
An innovative research agenda in evolutionary biology, and its interface with medicine;
The training and expertise to contribute broadly to undergraduate teaching in evolution.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates and /or supervising research projects;
A track record of commitment to wider responsibilities in a current or previous institution (for example, in promoting mentoring or public engagement).
The duties and responsibilities:
To conduct research in some area of evolutionary biology, and its interface with medicine;
To teach undergraduate and graduate students in evolutionary biology, including lectures, practical classes and small-group teaching for the College and contribution to Direction of Studies in Natural Sciences;
To contribute to administration and governance within the Department and College.
The appointment will be from 1 October 2017 with some possibility for flexibility.
Appointment will be for a probationary period of three years with appointment up to five years in total, subject to satisfactory performance.
