The atmospheric process group within the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge is looking for a Post-doctoral Research Associate to contribute to a programme of original research into the dynamics and parametrisation of moist convection in the atmosphere.
The post is part of ParaCon (Parameterization of Convection), a five-year programme jointly funded between NERC and the Met Office with the aim of significantly improving the representation of convection across model scales from 1-100km. Besides the Met Office, ParaCon includes contributions of the Universities of Cambridge, Exeter, Leeds, and Reading. The aim of the Cambridge project is to use Large Eddy Simulations (LES) to characterize and quantify key elements of convection. The work will be performed within the framework of a new parameterization, the Convective Cloud Field Model (CCFM) coupled to the UK Met Office Unified Model (UM). The focus of the post will be to perform and analyse high-resolution (LES) simulations of convective clouds starting from simulations of idealised individual convective cloud elements moving towards simulations of fully interactive convective cloud fields. The goal is to improve entrainment and other processes within the entraining parcel model used in CCFM and to determine the predictability of the convective cloud spectra. Outcomes from this work will not only lead to a better CCFM but more crucially, will inform any new or existing convection parameterization for the UM.
The post involves travel to international conferences and project meetings. There will be the possibility to co-advise doctoral students and potentially other teaching opportunities.
Applicants should have a doctorate in atmospheric science or a related field and ideally a strong background in cloud physics, boundary layer processes and high-resolution modelling. Proficiency in computer programming (e.g. FORTRAN) is expected.
