We seek a skilled manager with prior relevant experience, for this senior role in managing an active cancer research institute in the University of Cambridge. The Hutchison/MRC Research Centre is a purpose-built institute that houses the Medical Research Council (MRC) Cancer Unit and components of the Department of Oncology, and includes advanced scientific resources for molecular cell biology, imaging and data analytics. Research programmes within the institute span basic to patient-led research on cancer, with overall funding of >£7M annually. This position will be held in the MRC Cancer Unit and based within the institute, which is located in the rapidly expanding Cambridge Biomedical Campus based on the Addenbrooke's Hospital site.
The post-holder's main responsibilities will be: (1) to ensure the efficient and effective provision of essential scientific facilities and support services (including molecular cell biology, computation/IT, advanced microscopy) for researchers in the Centre, through the management of staff teams involved in laboratory infrastructure, IT and health and safety, comprising ~20 staff. (2) to ensure effective allocation and management of core infrastructure and MRC Cancer Unit funds, secured via quinquennial review and through annual capital bidding processes for specialized scientific equipment, and (3) to ensure cost-effective upkeep of the Centre's building infrastructure, services and advanced instrumentation. In this senior position, the post-holder will line manage staff leading the Centre's teams for laboratory infrastructure, IT and health & safety, and play a key role in developing future strategy to deliver these responsibilities.
Candidates should be educated to BSc level or equivalent in biomedical science or other relevant subject, and should have a postgraduate management/financial qualification, or equivalent knowledge and experience gained in a relevant research environment.
Candidates must demonstrate an ability (ideally through prior experience) to effectively manage complex multi-£M budgets over periods of several years, and be able to produce and communicate financial reports and forecasts using appropriate software. Candidates must demonstrate (ideally through prior experience) sufficient understanding of scientific and IT issues to manage provision of essential infrastructure, instrumentation and facilities. Candidates must have significant line and team management experience, preferably in a service provision environment. Experience of a senior managerial role in the biomedical research sector, or a similar organisation, is preferable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, and would ideally include the ability to communicate with administrative as well as scientific colleagues over a wide range of seniority.
