We are currently looking to recruit talented students for a unique programme which combines industry experience with cutting edge research in civil engineering, delivered in collaboration with a range of top-tier contractors and consultants at the UK's top ranking Engineering Department. Successful applicants will spend 1 year working with an industry partner, prior to starting a 1 year MRes + 3 year PhD programme at the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Infrastructure and Built Environment (FIBE CDT). This offers the unique opportunity to focus your research on creating solutions to real-world industry problems and identifying opportunities for innovation with commercial potential.
The FIBE-CDT delivers an innovative model of doctoral education focused on cohort-based training. During your year in industry, you will have the opportunity to join the graduate training scheme delivered by your industry partner and also to participate in FIBE CDT activities at the University of Cambridge. You will then start your 1 year MRes + 3 year PhD programme, where you will undertake training in both core civil engineering subjects and specialist modules to develop your research interests and prepare you for your PhD studies. Applicants are not required to have a proposed PhD topic or supervisor in order to apply and the I+ year and MRes programme are designed to allow you to explore your interests through industry experience, labs, courses and group projects.
The FIBE CDT's research and training activities focus on integrating Cambridge's internationally recognised strength in structures, geotechnics, materials, construction, sustainable development, building physics and water and waste within the wider context of related engineering disciplines, architecture, the sciences, land economy, manufacturing, business, economics, policy and social science, and also includes entrepreneurial training delivered in collaboration with the Judge Business School.
Students are normally expected to have a 2.1 or 1st class honours degree or an equivalent standard, and candidates from a civil engineering background and other cognate disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applications will be considered on a rolling basis with the current round of admissions closing on 31st March 2017. Early application is strongly encouraged. Instructions on how to apply can be found at https://www.cdt-civil.eng.cam.ac.uk/admissions/iplus. Please note that the application process for the I+ scheme differs from MRes + PhD programme and should be submitted directly to the Programme Administrator at email@example.com.
