A position exists, for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on novel composite bistable technologies for the safe operation of aircraft landing gear.
The post holder will join the Advanced Structures Group (central Cambridge site, Cambridgeshire, UK), which is known for its internationally leading research in deployable/morphing/shape-changing structures.
The successful applicant must be competent in the structural mechanics of plates and shells, understand material failure mechanisms, and be experienced in finite element analysis involving nonlinear geometry and in making and testing composite shells. The project aims to establish limits of behaviour of the proposed bistable technologies, in order to inform their robust design and implementation into aircraft systems. The applicant will be expected to perform mathematical analysis of plate and shell structures for rudimentary, informative predictions of equilibrium shapes and peak stresses. A nonlinear finite element study and laboratory tests will be employed to complement such predictions, to enable working regimes of safe behaviour for the technology, and to inform a final optimisation study for the best possible performance. The project has partners from the aerospace industry, who meet quarterly to discuss research findings and their future direction.
The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are: possessing, or near to possessing, a PhD in structural mechanics and/or structural design; using finite element software for geometrically nonlinear problems; analytical modelling of large displacement plate and shell problems; using general numerical analysis software; making composite shells and designing small-scale experimental test rigs; general presentation skills.
Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £25,298 - £29,301; Research Associate: £29,301 - £38,183
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 August 2019 in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
